Water from the Rock Story - Bible
Send Wishes with Message Magic in Your Language. The whole Israelite community set out from the desert of Sin. They traveled from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim. But there was no water for the people to drink.
So the people argued with Moses. They said, 'Give us water to drink.'
Moses replied, 'Why are you arguing with me? Why are you putting the Lord to the test?'
But the people were thirsty for water there. They complained against Moses. They said, 'Why did you bring us up out of Egypt? Did you bring us out here to make us and our children and our livestock die of thirst?'
Then Moses cried out to the Lord. He said, 'What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.'
The Lord answered Moses, 'Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel. Take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock. Water will come out of it for the people to drink.'
So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. He struck the rock. Water came out of it. The people drank the water. God had provided for them again.
Moses called that place Massah and Meribah. Massah means 'testing.' Meribah means 'quarreling.' The Israelites tested the Lord. They said, 'Is the Lord among us or not?'
Many years later, the Israelites were wandering in the desert again. They came to the desert of Zin. They camped at Kadesh. There was no water for the community. The people gathered together against Moses and Aaron.
They argued with Moses. They said, 'If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the Lord! Why did you bring the Lord's community into this desert? We and our livestock will die here. Why did you bring us up out of Egypt? Why did you bring us to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs. It has no grapevines or pomegranates. There is no water to drink!'
Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting. They fell facedown. The glory of the Lord appeared to them. The Lord said to Moses, 'Take the staff. You and your brother Aaron gather the assembly. Speak to that rock before their eyes. It will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community and their livestock.'
So Moses took the staff from the Lord's presence, just as he commanded. He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock. Moses said to them, 'Listen, you rebels! Must we bring you water out of this rock?'
Then Moses raised his arm. He struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out. The community and their livestock drank.
But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 'Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.'
Those were the waters of Meribah. That is where the Israelites argued with the Lord. That is where the Lord showed himself holy among them.
Moses had made a mistake. God told him to speak to the rock. But Moses struck the rock instead. He also took credit for the miracle himself. He said, 'Must WE bring you water?' He did not give God the glory.
Even though Moses made a mistake, God still provided water. He is always faithful. He gives us what we need, even when we complain. But we should learn to trust God and obey Him completely. We should always give Him the glory for the wonderful things He does.
