The Ten Commandments Story - Bible
Send Wishes with Message Magic in Your Language.Three months after leaving Egypt, the Israelites came to the desert of Sinai. They camped in front of the mountain called Mount Sinai.
Moses went up the mountain to talk with God. The Lord called to Moses from the mountain and said, 'Tell the people that if they obey Me and keep My covenant, they will be My special treasure.'
All the people answered together, 'Everything the Lord has said, we will do.'
The Lord said to Moses, 'Go to the people and tell them to get ready. On the third day, I will come down to Mount Sinai so all the people can see Me.'
On the morning of the third day, there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud covered the mountain. A very loud trumpet blast made everyone tremble. Smoke billowed up from the mountain because the Lord had come down in fire. The whole mountain shook violently.
Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God. They stood at the foot of the mountain. Only Moses was allowed to go up.
Then God spoke these words to the people:
The First Commandment: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'
The Second Commandment: 'You shall not make for yourself an idol. Do not bow down to any statue or picture of anything in heaven, on earth, or in the water. I am a jealous God.'
The Third Commandment: 'You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Anyone who uses His name without respect will be punished.'
The Fourth Commandment: 'Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall work and do all your work, but the seventh day is a day of rest for the Lord your God. On that day, no one shall do any work.'
The Fifth Commandment: 'Honor your father and your mother. If you do, you will live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.'
The Sixth Commandment: 'You shall not murder.'
The Seventh Commandment: 'You shall not commit adultery.'
The Eighth Commandment: 'You shall not steal.'
The Ninth Commandment: 'You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. Do not lie.'
The Tenth Commandment: 'You shall not covet. Do not want your neighbor's house, wife, servants, animals, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.'
When the people heard the thunder and the loud trumpet, they trembled with fear. They stayed far away. They said to Moses, 'You speak to us, and we will listen. But do not let God speak to us, or we will die!'
Moses said, 'Do not be afraid. God has come to test you so that you will fear Him and not sin.'
Moses went up the mountain again. He stayed there for forty days and forty nights. The Lord wrote the Ten Commandments on two stone tablets with His own finger.
But down at the bottom of the mountain, the people became impatient. They said to Aaron, 'We do not know what happened to Moses. Make us gods who will lead us.'
Aaron told the people to bring their gold earrings. He melted the gold and made a statue of a calf. The people said, 'This is our god who brought us out of Egypt!' They built an altar and worshiped the golden calf.
God saw how bad the people were. He said to Moses, 'Go down, because your people have become very bad. They have made a golden calf and are worshiping it.'
Moses went down the mountain carrying the two stone tablets. When he saw the golden calf and the people dancing, he became very angry. He threw the tablets out of his hands, and they broke into pieces at the bottom of the mountain.
Moses burned the golden calf, ground it into powder, and mixed it with water. He made the Israelites drink it.
Moses went back up the mountain to ask God to forgive the people. God said He would not destroy them, but the people would be punished for their sin.
God told Moses to chisel out two new stone tablets, just like the first ones. Moses went up the mountain early in the morning. The Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with Moses. God wrote the Ten Commandments again on the new tablets.
When Moses came down from the mountain, his face was shining because he had talked with God. He did not know his face was shining. Aaron and all the people were afraid to come near him. So Moses put a veil over his face.
The Ten Commandments were kept in a special box called the Ark of the Covenant. They reminded God's people to love God and love others. Jesus later said that all the commandments can be summed up in two: Love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.
