Jesus was arrested and led away to the house of Caiaphas the high priest. Peter followed him at a distance. He followed right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

A servant girl came up to him. She said, 'You also were with Jesus of Galilee.'

But Peter denied it in front of everyone. 'I don't know what you're talking about,' he said.

Then he went out to the gateway. Another servant girl saw him. She said to the people there, 'This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.'

He denied it again, this time with an oath. 'I don't know the man,' he said.

After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter. They said, 'Surely you are one of them. Your accent gives you away.'

Then Peter began to call down curses. He swore to them, 'I don't know the man!'

Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken. 'Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Earlier that evening, at the Last Supper, Peter had said to Jesus, 'Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'

Jesus answered, 'Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!'

Peter did not believe it. He thought he was strong enough. He thought he would never deny Jesus. But he was afraid. When the servant girl asked if he knew Jesus, he said no. When another person asked, he said no again. When a group said his accent gave him away, he cursed and swore that he did not know Jesus.

Then the rooster crowed. Jesus looked at Peter. Peter remembered what Jesus had said. He had denied his Lord three times. He went outside and wept bitterly. He was so sorry.

Peter learned that he was not as strong as he thought. He needed Jesus. He could not follow Jesus in his own strength. But Jesus did not give up on Peter. After the resurrection, Jesus forgave Peter and gave him a special job. He told Peter to feed his sheep. Peter became a great leader in the early church.

We are like Peter. We want to be strong for Jesus. But sometimes we are afraid. Sometimes we deny him by our words or actions. But Jesus forgives us when we are sorry. He gives us another chance. He can still use us to do great things for his kingdom.
