John the Baptist Prepares the Way Story - Bible
Send Wishes with Message Magic in Your Language. In the days when Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah. His wife Elizabeth was also from a priestly family. They were both good people who obeyed all the Lord's commands. But they had no children, and both were very old.
One day, Zechariah was serving as a priest in the temple. An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar. Zechariah was scared and troubled. But the angel said, 'Do not be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will have a son. You will name him John. He will be great in the Lord's sight. He will bring joy and gladness to you and to many people. He will prepare the people for the Lord.'
Zechariah said, 'How can I know this? I am old, and my wife is also old.'
The angel answered, 'I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God. I was sent to tell you this good news. But now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this happens.'
When Zechariah came out of the temple, he could not speak. The people realized he had seen a vision.
When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child. They were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But Elizabeth said, 'No! He is to be called John.'
They said to her, 'There is no one among your relatives who has that name.' Then they made signs to his father to find out what he would like to name the child. Zechariah asked for a writing tablet. To everyone's surprise, he wrote, 'His name is John.' Immediately Zechariah could speak again. He began to praise God.
All the neighbors were filled with awe. People talked about this all through the hill country of Judea. Everyone who heard this wondered about it. They asked, 'What then is this child going to be?'
Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied. He said, 'Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel. He has come to his people and set them free. And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him. You will tell his people how they can be saved. You will tell them that their sins will be forgiven.'
The child grew up and became strong in spirit. He lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel.
When John grew up, he went into all the country around the Jordan River. He preached that people should be baptized to show that they were turning away from their sins and turning to God. This is what the prophet Isaiah had written about: 'A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in. Every mountain and hill shall be made low. The crooked roads shall become straight. The rough ways shall become smooth. And all people will see God's salvation.''
John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, 'You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees. Every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.'
'What should we do then?' the crowd asked.
John answered, 'Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none. Anyone who has food should do the same.'
Even tax collectors came to be baptized. 'Teacher,' they asked, 'what should we do?'
'Don't collect any more than you are required to,' he told them.
Then some soldiers asked him, 'And what should we do?'
He replied, 'Don't extort money. Don't accuse people falsely. Be content with your pay.'
The people were waiting expectantly. They were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. John answered them all, 'I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come. I am not worthy to untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn. But he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.'
And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
John the Baptist was the voice preparing the way for Jesus. He told everyone that the Savior was coming. He pointed people away from himself and toward Jesus. When Jesus came, John said, 'Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!' John prepared people's hearts so they would be ready to receive Jesus.
