Jacob had tricked his brother Esau out of his blessing. Esau was so angry that he wanted to kill Jacob. So Jacob's mother Rebekah told him, 'Run away to my brother Laban in Harran. Stay with him until your brother's anger cools down.'

Jacob left Beersheba and started walking toward Harran. He traveled many miles. When the sun went down, he stopped for the night. He took one of the stones from that place and put it under his head. He lay down to sleep.

While Jacob was sleeping, he had a wonderful dream. In his dream, he saw a staircase or ladder that was set up on the earth. The top of the ladder reached all the way up to heaven. Angels of God were going up and down the ladder.

At the top of the ladder stood the Lord. The Lord said, 'I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of your father Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth. They will spread out to the west, to the east, to the north, and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you. I will watch over you wherever you go. I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.'

Jacob woke up from his sleep. He said, 'Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.' Jacob was afraid. He said, 'How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God. This is the gate of heaven.'

Early the next morning, Jacob took the stone he had put under his head. He set it up as a pillar. He poured oil on top of it. He named that place Bethel, which means 'house of God.' Before that, the town was called Luz.

Then Jacob made a promise. He said, 'If God will be with me. If God will watch over me on this journey I am taking. If God will give me food to eat and clothes to wear. If I return safely to my father's household, then the Lord will be my God. This stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house. And of all that you give me, I will give you a tenth.'

Jacob continued on his journey. God did watch over him. Many years later, Jacob returned to Bethel. He had become a rich man with many children and many animals. God had kept every promise He made to Jacob that night.

The ladder in Jacob's dream showed that there is a connection between heaven and earth. God reaches down to us, and we can reach up to God. Many years later, Jesus said that He is the ladder. Jesus is the way to heaven. Through Jesus, we can be connected to God. Angels are always working to help God's people. God watches over us wherever we go. He never leaves us. He always keeps His promises.
