Jacob Wrestles with God Story - Bible
Send Wishes with Message Magic in Your Language.Jacob had sent his family and all his possessions across the Jabbok River. He was left alone that night. A man came and wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower Jacob, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip. Jacob's hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
Then the man said, 'Let me go, for it is daybreak.'
But Jacob replied, 'I will not let you go unless you bless me.'
The man asked him, 'What is your name?'
'Jacob,' he answered.
Then the man said, 'Your name will no longer be Jacob. It will be Israel. You have struggled with God and with human beings. You have overcome.'
Jacob said, 'Please tell me your name.'
But the man replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' Then he blessed Jacob there.
So Jacob called the place Peniel, which means 'face of God.' He said, 'I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.'
The sun rose above him as he passed by Peniel. He was limping because of his hip. That is why even today the people of Israel do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip. It is because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon.
Jacob had spent many years away from his homeland. He had tricked his brother Esau out of his blessing. Then he had run away to his uncle Laban's house. He had worked for Laban for twenty years. Laban had tricked him many times. But God had blessed Jacob. He had given him a large family and many flocks and herds.
Now Jacob was returning home. He was about to meet his brother Esau. He was very afraid. He thought Esau might still want to kill him. The night before he met Esau, Jacob wrestled with God. He held on and would not let go until God blessed him.
God changed Jacob's name to Israel, which means 'he struggles with God.' Jacob had been a deceiver. He had tricked people. But after wrestling with God, he was changed. He became a new person. He limped for the rest of his life. That limp reminded him that he had met God face to face.
Sometimes we struggle with God. We want things our own way. We fight against his plans. But when we hold on to God and ask for his blessing, he changes us. He makes us new. He gives us a new name and a new purpose. Jacob became the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. God used him to build a great nation. When we stop fighting God and start trusting him, he can do amazing things through us.
