Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus. He wanted to find people who belonged to the Way, which was what the early church was called. He wanted to find both men and women. He wanted to take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

As Saul neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground. He heard a voice speak to him. 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?' the voice said.

Saul asked, 'Who are you, Lord?'

The voice replied, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Now get up and go into the city. You will be told what you must do.'

The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless. They heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground. He opened his eyes but could not see a thing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind. He did not eat or drink anything.

In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision. 'Ananias!' the Lord said.

Ananias answered, 'Yes, Lord.'

The Lord told him, 'Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street. Ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.'

Ananias answered, 'Lord, I have heard many reports about this man. People have told me how much evil he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. He has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.'

But the Lord said to Ananias, 'Go! I have chosen this man to serve me. He will make my name known to the Gentiles and their kings. He will make my name known to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for me.'

Then Ananias went to the house. He placed his hands on Saul and said, 'Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here, has sent me. He sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.'

Right away something like scales fell from Saul's eyes. He could see again. He got up and was baptized. After eating some food, he got his strength back.

Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.

All who heard him were astonished. They asked, 'Isn't this the man who caused great trouble in Jerusalem? Didn't he come here to take people as prisoners to the chief priests?'

But Saul grew more and more powerful. He confused the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.

After many days had gone by, the Jews made a plan to kill Saul. But Saul learned about their plan. Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him. But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall. So Saul escaped.

When Saul came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples. But they were all afraid of him. They did not believe that he was really a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord. He told them that the Lord had spoken to Saul. He also told them how Saul had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus in Damascus.

So Saul stayed with them. He moved about freely in Jerusalem and spoke boldly in the name of the Lord. He talked and debated with the Grecian Jews. But they tried to kill him.

When the believers learned of this, they took Saul down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.

Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.

Saul, who was later called Paul, changed from being the worst enemy of the church to being one of its greatest missionaries. He traveled all over the world telling people about Jesus. He wrote many letters that became part of the Bible. God can change anyone. No one is too bad for God to save. If God could change Saul, he can change anyone.
